Tote Bags & Handbags

Tote bags and handbags with faith and heritage artwork on shopper totes, plus holiday, golf and country music designs.

Bags get chosen on the design and returned over the handles. That is the pattern, and it is avoidable. A bag is a piece of equipment before it is a printed object, and two measurements on the product page — handle drop and base width — tell you more about whether you will actually use it than any photograph does.

Handle Drop Decides Shoulder or Hand

Handle drop is the distance from the top of the handle down to the bag opening, and it decides how the bag can be carried. A short drop of around 15 centimetres is a hand-carry bag; it will not clear a coat and a shoulder comfortably. Around 25 centimetres or more goes over a shoulder easily. Most disappointment with a tote bag comes from buying a hand-carry drop while expecting to wear it on a shoulder, especially over a winter coat.

A Full Bag Changes the Print

A flat empty tote shows the design as drawn. Loaded, the panel curves outward and the print curves with it, so a wide graphic wraps toward the sides and text across the middle stretches slightly. Central, compact designs survive being filled; edge-to-edge artwork distorts most. This is worth knowing if the bag will be used rather than displayed, because product photographs are almost always taken empty.

Capacity Is Not the Same as Usable Space

Stated volume assumes a bag packed to the top and holding its shape, which real use rarely matches. A flat-bottomed bag with a gusset stands up and uses its capacity; a flat two-panel bag with no base folds and loses much of it. If you plan to carry anything boxy, groceries or a laptop, look for a base gusset rather than a larger stated litre figure.

Canvas Weight and What It Carries

Canvas is graded by weight, and heavier fabric carries more without deforming but is stiffer and slower to dry. Light canvas is fine for a book and a jumper; heavy canvas is what you want for shopping. The weakest point on any tote is where the handle joins the body, so reinforced or bar-tacked stitching there matters far more than the fabric weight itself.

Washing a Bag Without Losing Its Shape

Wash cool, inside out, and reshape it while damp rather than after it dries. Hot water shrinks untreated cotton canvas noticeably, and a tumble dryer both shrinks it and stresses the handle seams. Air drying flat, or hung by the base rather than by the handles, keeps the shape.

Where This Sits in the Catalogue

Bags are part of home and living as everyday items rather than clothing. Because they have no size, they are a dependable gift and appear in Mother’s Day and Easter selections. A bag pairs with a tumbler for commuting, with bikini sets and a blanket for a day out, and with a coffee mug as a desk set. Branded quantities for events are in stadium giveaways. FAQ

It is the distance from the top of the handle to the bag opening, and it decides how you can carry it. Around 15 cm is hand-carry; 25 cm or more goes over a shoulder, including over a coat.

Because the panel curves outward when loaded and the print curves with it. Wide graphics wrap toward the sides and central text stretches slightly. Compact central designs survive best.

Only if it holds its shape. A flat two-panel bag with no base folds and loses much of its volume. For boxy contents look for a base gusset rather than a bigger litre figure.

Where the handle joins the body. Reinforced or bar-tacked stitching at that join matters more than the fabric weight for how long the bag lasts.

Light canvas suits a book and a jumper. Heavy canvas carries shopping without deforming, at the cost of being stiffer and slower to dry.

Cool water, inside out, and reshape while still damp. Hot water shrinks untreated cotton canvas, and a tumble dryer shrinks it and stresses the handle seams.

Flat, or hung by the base rather than by the handles. Hanging a wet loaded-shape bag by its handles stretches the join you least want stretched.
