Sullivan, nicknamed “The Boston Strong Boy.” Born in 1858 to Irish immigrant parents in Boston, Sullivan became the last heavyweight champion of the bare-knuckle era and is widely regarded as the first heavyweight champion of gloved boxing.

The year 1882 printed on the design refers to the year Sullivan defeated Paddy Ryan in Mississippi City, Mississippi, to claim the heavyweight championship. That win launched a reign that lasted a decade. During that time, Sullivan toured the country, famously offering money to anyone who could last against him. He turned boxing from a back-room spectacle into a sport that drew national headlines.

He also fought in the last heavyweight title bout under bare-knuckle rules, defeating Jake Kilrain in 1889 in a fight that went 75 rounds. In 1892, he lost the title to James J. Corbett in New Orleans under the Marquess of Queensberry rules, a moment that symbolically closed one era of boxing and opened another.
